What Color of German Shepherd Would You Get?

If you crossed a White German Shepherd and a Standard German Shepherd?
Would you get a cross between the two, or would you get a couple of each color? Or would you just get one color?

Let me know! Thanks.

By standard GSD I assume you probably mean black and tan? Actually, breeders of whites do this type of cross every few generations to reduce inbreeding. Most white GSDs aren’t truly white; they do have pale pigment on the ear tips and spine, and they have normal black skin with brown eyes. It’s thought to be a type of dilution at the C locus.Assuming the black and tan is not a carrier of white, you’d get black and tan pups. If the black and tan is a carrier of white, you’d get a litter with both B/Ts and whites.

There’s nothing wrong with a well bred white GSD. They are a legitimate part of breed history and occurred from the beginning. As long as the skin and eyes are pigmented, they are as sound as any other color. The ones I know personally have wonderful temperaments and are everything a GSD should be. They’re protective of home and family but readily accept friends and family when introduced by their owners. They’re not spooky and nervous and they have lifespans comparable to other GSDs. That’s not to say there aren’t bybs that produce lower quality. Of course there are. There are with any breed. But there are also dedicated breeders producing some very good ones. Just check them out thoroughly before buying. I’ve seen whites used as police K9s, Schutzhund competitors, therapy dogs, pets, and herding dogs.

As for the question of the color being in the standard or not, in AKC it is not a recognized color. But it is perfectly acceptable to the Canadian Kennel Club and the Mexican Kennel Club. Sometimes breed clubs eliminate certain colors on a rather arbitrary basis. Black Newfs are fine; brown(bronze) Newfs are fine; black and white News are fine; but brown and white is DQ’d! Yet the natural consequence of breeding the other three colors is the occurance of the 4th. In fact, brown/white and black/white can be found in the same litter. If brown noses and eye rims are sound on brown News, they are equally sound on brown/white Newfs. If you like white German shepherds, get a good one. If you want a brown and white Newf, or a yellow Lab with brown skin, why not?

I wouldn’t go near a white. I’d get a dog who’s color is listed in the breed standard.

White coloration is not acceptable by the breed standard. And you might think, so that’s no big deal, it’s just a color. But I know better. Those standards are written for a reason. The genetics that gives you the all white color are associated with health and temperament problems. This is why it’s a disqualifying fault with the GSD’s.

depends on if the standard one carried the recessive white gene. the white gene is recessive, and if the standard one is not a carrier of this gene they will abll be standard. if the standard does carry the recessive gene, it will be a mix

A white shouldn’t be bred at all as white is a disqualifying fault in the breed so the genes shouldn’t be passed on.

Genetically assuming the standard GSD did not carry the genes for white you would get all normal colored puppies that carried the genes for white. White in GSD is a recessive gene meaning a dog has to have 2 coppies of the white gene to be white. If the standard colored GSD carried the gene for white you would get about 50% standard that carried white and 50% white puppies.

A pure white German Shepherd has a bad temper. There is something in their genes that makes them that way. Occasionally you’ll get a good one. I’ve heard a lot of people talk about what their White German Shepherd has. Breeders and Trainers even tell people to stay away from the White German Shepherd. The Saddle Back and the Solid Black German or K9 Shepherd is fine. We have a Solid Black German Shepherd and she is so loving and wonderful with children. We love her to death. Get a Black Shepherd and stay away from the White Shepherd.

It depends on the genetic history of the coloured shepherd. If your standard shepherd has no white pups in the recent history (last 3 generations), then it is doubtful you will have any white pups. The white colour is recessive, so both dogs must have the white gene to have white pups.
If your coloured dog does have the white gene, then approximately 1/2 the litter of pups would be white, the other half would be coloured.
Future Bride to Be – what a load of rubbish, what you are saying is that yellow labs have a different temperament to black labs, please do actual internet research before making statements.
Jen – they have no more health or temperament problems than a standard shepherd, as they have the same breed history.
