I have a 3 year old german shepherd,and suddenly he just stands at the gate and barks at nothing.We look outside and even come outside and there is nothing.No cars,birds,or people and he just barks.

Dogs are annoying. Mine do that too. Try scolding them everytime they do it, and maybe they’ll get that it’s bad, but unlikely.

Just because you don’t see or hear anything doesn’t mean he can’t. Dogs can hear things almost a mile away. He could be triggered by something happening in someone else’s house for all you know.
