German shepherds are really good dogs, in the hands of an mature, responsible and experienced person. I wouldn't recommend you getting one of those, it might be better for you to try and find an older, already trained and patient dog from the animal shelter.

What do you want your German Shepherd Dog to do? German Shepherd Dogs are a working breed and truly happiest with a job. Depending on what you want your GSD to do, would really drive where you'd start your search. You may consider starting with a search on any of the GSD sites or the AKC boards.
I have a working line GSD that I intended to do Schutzhund with so I went to a breeder that was also involved in Schutzhund and who breeds dogs with a temperament to do that kind of work. We've worked hard on socialization with him for this so we can also take him out and about with his. He's very different than our lab, who is really a big teddy bear.
For a good working dog from a strong line, you can pay expect to pay $1,500 or more. Some dogs that come already trained in protection cost nearly $50,000.
GSDs are strong, smart and beautiful dogs with a strong need for mental and physical stimulation. This means that you will need to spend several hours per day with your dog in order for it to be happy and fulfilled. It isn't a lap dog type breed.
You didn't say why you've decided on a GSD but I always encourage anyone to find a dog that suits their current lifestyle.
