German Shepherds - Some Tips When Looking For A New Dog

German Shepherds have been an immensely popular breed for over a century. This large breed was first introduced outside of Germany during the first World War and has steadily gained a loyal following. German Shepherds are intelligent, loyal dogs and make great family pets. They are also well suited to work in such occupations as seeing eye dogs, watchdogs, police work and more. These canines are well rounded and make great additions to any family.

Choose a reputable breeder. German Shepherds, just like any other breed, have their share of health problems. You can avoid picking a puppy that's prone to such problems by choosing a good breeder. A good breeder will be concerned about the health and quality of all their German Shepherds. If you aren't sure where to look, contact your local breed council for recommendations.

Diet is important. Just like with humans what you feed, your German Shepherd ultimately is one of the deciding factors in its health, growth and development. Talk to your veterinarian about what types of things should be in the diet of a large breed like the German Shepherd.

German Shepherds, like many large breeds, commonly suffer from hip dysplasia. This is a disease that affects the shoulder and elbow joints much like arthritis. One way to reduce the chances of this German Shepherd health problem occurring is to keep exercise to a reasonable level for the first six months. This is a crucial time in your puppy's development and overdoing it can cause problems down the line.

Other German Shepherd health concerns include Hemophilia A. This blood clotting disorder affects the males and can be hereditary. Although not subject themselves, the females can be carriers. Pancreatic Insufficiency causes food to not be digested properly. Treatment is a life long process. Bloat or Gastric Torsion is also common. Feeding two smaller meals a day instead of one large one can help prevent this painful condition.

Many of the health conditions that German Shepherds suffer from are hereditary. This is one of the reasons why a reputable breeder should be picked. They will know their German Shepherds and their histories and can inform you of anything you need to watch out for. To keep your German shepherd healthy and happy, be sure to exercise your dog regularly. It is also a good idea to get yearly check ups. German Shepherds are also very social creatures. So taking them to a dog park or allowing them to interact with other dogs and people is also a good idea. German Shepherds are also very trainable, so have some fun and teach your dog some interesting and fun tricks. These are all sure ways to keep your German Shepherd healthy.

What breedline of a German Shepherd is right for me?

I am looking for a German Shepherd. I am hoping for an American Shepherd look. But I also want a Shepherd willing to work, but not way too energetic. I heard the from the American breeders that German bloodline is aggresive and unsound. I also heard from the German breeders that American bloodline is stupid and cowardly. I also heard that mixing bothe bloodline is good. Does anyone know much about this? Oh also any other information about German shepherds is welcomed. I am doing a research report on them. And does anyone know of good german shepherds breeders, preferably in Indiana.

You should get one from the shelter. Just because they're shelter dogs doesn't make the fancy bred ones better! We've adopted both of ours from www.petfinder.com they have thousands of homeless animals Shepherds included. The 2 we got from the shelter turned out to be some of the best dogs we've ever owned. So cool that your getting a Shepherd!! As for some info…http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/germanshepherd.htm :) Good luck!

Will a German shepherd be able to defend me against a pit bull and win?

I have a 90 lbs German Shepherd and we walk past a yard with a vicious pit bull. Will it win a fight against the pit bull if it chooses to jump the fence and attack?
I look at studies and they discovered that pit bulls DO NOT have locked jaws. However sometimes pit bulls jaw muscle continue to contract after tranquilize along with other breeds like Belgian Malinois. Also a German shepherd has more bite force.

Not sure but I was letting my friend's german shepard in the house and it got loose from me and ran after a man walking a pit bull so they must be confident enough to do it.

Australian Shepherd: As Good As Its German Variety

Australian Shepherd is every bit as graceful as its more famous German variety. And like German Shepherd, these too, are bred as herd dogs, trained and nourished to take care of cattle. Also referred to as "Aussie", they first appeared in Australia in the early 1800s and come in colors ranging from near black to blue merle. The original purpose of this breed was to serve as guardians for sheep and cattle herds, but it did not take very long for them to build a reputation for sharp intelligence and unfailing loyalty.

They also come in a number of sizes from sleek and gangling to short and stout. They weight from 35 to 65, and some of them have now the famous one-blue-one-brown-eye combination. Quite a prankster, the Aussies' capacity for 'humor' is matchless among dogs.

However, the Aussie is not for everyone. Having been bred as a herd dog it does not take well to the apartment living of the modern day. It needs space to move and play around. They have no patience to sit and watch television alongside other family members. Their idea of socialization is going out in open, jog around a little and play around a lot. So, if you are one of those television-after-office kind, the Aussie is certainly not for you. It is energetic to the extremes and would try its best to pull you in an active game. Do not expect it to lie at your feet while you type away on your computer or do easy chit chat on phone. You may live in a apartment and it will be happy so long as evenings are his and he gets to play "canine frisbee" or catch-me-if-you-can every evening without fail.

Once you are home from office, it would either want you to indulge with him in a wrestling match or take him out. If you don't do either, he would find something to do all by himself, which may not be a good news, for they have the reputation for chewing and eating anything that allows their teeth to sink in.

It is highly intelligent and has this deep rooted tendency to closely 'investigate' everything. If you are cooking, it may come in to smell and check if the pots smell good and if you are in the shower it may jump in to join you. Besides, they are not really very welcoming hosts. Their sense of humor goes to dogs (other dogs, that is) when it comes to entertaining an unknown guest. They would stare and growl if a guest drops in unannounced. So, if you are getting an Aussie, tell your friends not to ring the bell every time they happen to pass by, for the Aussie is not going to like it. They are kind to children and are staunch protectors of the family.
