Finding a Regal German Shepherd

When it comes to regal bearing, there is no dog breed that has more than the German Shepherd. It’s quite ironic considering that these are one of the hardest working breeds today. They are used for herding animals, guarding buildings, K-9 units, sniffing out gas leaks, finding missing people, or even looking for bombs. They are also utilized for assistance like leading the blind or helping individuals who are bound to a wheelchair. Oh, and they make great family pets as well.

If all dog breeds had a title amongst royalty; German Shepherds would be the knights of old. They are strong, agile, and well defined. The average standing length is around 24 to 26 inches and they weight in between 75 to 90 pounds. When their ears are standing tall and their head held high its easy to see that they are very composed and aware of their surroundings. It’s just a few things that this breed has been known for over the years.

Take a look at their head and you will see that its cleanly chiseled in proportion with the body. Depending on the sex of the dog there features are very distinct. Both their almond shaped eyes and nose are usually dark in color.

However, they do come in a variety of colors. The most common options are black and tan, but they do have coats of silver/tan, gold/tan, and even pure white and pure black.

Temperament

They are normally fearless, but refrain from hostility. They are probably one of the most confident dogs out there. They are also slow to warm up to strangers, but they won’t be aggressive unless the family is in danger. Often times they are willing to give their lives to protect its family without a second thought.

You will also find that German Shepherds are extremely intelligent, which is why they are trainable. During this time it’s important to have an owner that is firm, but gentle. Always be in control, because your German Shepherd will need mental and physical stimulation every single day. They should also have plenty of socialization.

In the end, if they’re trained properly, a German Shepherd will be happy and content. Plus they will be great with the kids.

Probably one of the most entertaining parts to owning a German Shepherd is that they’re fun and easy to train. If you have a decent sized back yard it’s easy to setup a little agility training. They perform these task almost to a “T.” We also recommend obedience training, which they are very successful in as well. If you have a ball or Frisbee they will be more than willing to play catch. You can also teach them tons of tricks along the way.

They will be looking forward to your morning and nightly walks, as well as any play time in between. The more exercise they can enjoy the calmer and more collected they will be in the house. This alleviates all that large dog clumsiness you normally expect.

If a German Shepherd has been on your list of dogs to purchase, this option could be the best choice for the entire family. They will provide and plenty of safety for everyone.
